Mr. Morgan Simon came to live in Toowoomba with his family in the 1930's. During the period from 1928 to 1950, he became very interested in the milling and marketing of cypress, as he could see great potential for cypress as a quality termite resistant building timber.
In July 1950, Mr. Simon formed the company Simon Pty. Ltd. with himself and wife Marion and children Walter, Guy, Jean and Ian as directors and shareholders. The three sons took managerial positions with the company on a full-time basis. Daughter Jean worked in the office until her marriage to John Mitchell in December 1958.
Simon Pty. Ltd. took over the timber yard at Snell Street, Toowoomba, operated by Morgan Hugh Simon and the timber yard at Herries Street, Toowoomba, operated by son Walter as Toowoomba Timber Co., also a borax treatment plant operated at Prescott Street, Toowoomba, operated by Toowoomba Timber Co.
At this time, members of the family owned sawmills at Western Creek, Millmerran, Chinchilla, Ballon State Forest and Cooyar. The original purpose for Simon Pty. Ltd. was for it to be a marketing arm for the sawmills. It also operated a planing machine, which processed flooring, chamfer boards and finishing timbers.
In 1950, it was decided that the selling of hardware and boards would be a good idea. A full time representative was appointed to sell to the building trade. As space was limited at Snell Street, the planing machine operation was set up at Jones Street, Toowoomba, in the latter part of 1950, on land that had been purchased earlier in the year. The borax treatment plant was also relocated to Jones Street in 1950. This was replaced by a Hickson pressure treatment plant in 1962. It proved difficult trying to operate from two locations, so it was decided to build a hardware store and office on adjoining land facing Wilkinson Street in 1960. This original store and office have been extended many times North, South, West and up as the needs have arisen. Other functions in relation to servicing the building trade have been added, such as the Truss manufacturing started in 1964 and Wallframe manufacturing started in 1979. Treatment of power poles was commenced in the mid 1960's. This led to the purchase of a prime mover and jinker in 1967 to cart poles from New South Wales. When this was no longer necessary the truck was used to deliver flooring to Darwin. Out of this grew a transport service and Simon Transport Pty. Ltd. was formed in 1973 under the managership of Morgan Eric Simon, son of Walter Simon. This is now a separate company.
Ross Simon, son of Guy Simon joined the company in 1979 and took over the managership of the timber division. Simon Pty. Ltd. is solely owned by the Simon family whose aim is to run a conservative, respectable, trustworthy company offering quality products and services, with happy dedicated staff. The company's logo is "Everything to build a Home" and this is the continuation of a vision seen by Morgan H. Simon many years ago.
